Green Building Standards

US Green Building Council (USGBC)
One of the pioneers in Green Building; developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program in 1998, which is one of the most well-known Green Building standards worldwide.

Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC)
Canada’s Green Building Council has adapted the USGBC LEED standards to tailor to the differences in the Canadian climate. Features news and events, examples of green projects, and links to other Canadian green building sites.

World Green Building Council (WorldGBC)

The Green Building Initiative (GBI)
An organization that has defined its own Green Building standard in collaboration with the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB).

Green Globes
A Canadian organization that has defined its own Green Building standard, and developed an online-based auditing tool for use throughout North America and the UK.

Product Certification Bodies

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
A non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way. FSC certifies forests, products, and all vendors in the chain of custody for compliance with its standard.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)
An independent US-based organization that is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. SFI has established its own standard for certification of forests and products managed and produced in a sustainable manner.
